It’s hard to believe that it’s Memorial Day weekend already — let the fun begin! It looks like a beautiful weekend ahead–there is a slight chance of rain Friday but sunny and in the mid 90′s through Monday. We have a busy weekend planned so take time to read down my list to capture everything :-)

  • The river has fallen to a relatively low level so be aware of depth and sand bars.
  • Thank you to all those that attended the Ottawa fire seminar, it was very informative. I will try and have some video clips available for viewing and some extinguisher fact sheets in the office to hand out. FYI; we have 4 hand held extinguishers on A dock, 6 on B dock, and 4 on C dock. There are fire extinguishers in each shower house hall and in the marina and sales offices. In addition, there are large wheeled cart extinguishers at the head of B and C dock plus one behind the fuel tank shed. Please familiarize your crew with the locations. Anyone wishing to know how to operate them should contact me for details. Again, NO fires or flames on the docks at any time.

On an HR note, I would like to report the following:

  • Regretfully Kelli, Tiffany and Zack will no longer be employed at the marina. Unfortunately they have made personal decisions that did not meet the standards set for Heritage Harbor. I thank them for their past service and wish them well.
  • On a positive note, Heritage Harbor has hired and named Leticia (pronounced La-tee-cee-ah) Becerra as Guest Services Coordinator. Leticia will work at the marina office and will be primarily charged with customer service and hospitality for marina guests and the rental program for Cottages at Heron’s Landing. Leticia should be a great fit for Heritage Harbor bringing nearly 4 years of hospitality experience and an additional 5 years of business experience with her to this new position. Leticia earned a Business Management degree from the University of Phoenix Online as well as an Accounting degree from Purdue. We will welcome Leticia to the Heritage Harbor team on June 4, 2012. Please make it a point to stop by and meet Leticia once she gets started.

Here’s what is happening this weekend that you won’t want to miss:

  • This Saturday is Captain Moe’s Boat Safely in the Illinois Pool at Tracy’s from 9:00am to 10:00am. This class if FREE but please e-mail us if you are planning on attending. E-mail secretary@h20boatclub.com.
  • A reminder that our Annual Marina Blessing will take place with some new traditions. It will kickoff at the end of A Dock at 10:30.
  • Saturday afternoon from 10-3:00 p.m., there will also be a representative from Mediacom to sign up extended cable services. They will have a table on the concrete pad by the new marina flagpole. Stop by and see what channels and services they offer over and above our basic service. Along those lines please be sure that the cable lines are not creating a hazard on the docks- keep them as neat as possible.
  • The pool will be open Friday through the weekend —all codes were cleared so stop at the office to check in and the codes will be re-entered.

Let’s everyone have a safe, fun holiday weekend and stop to remember the sacrifices others have made so that we may enjoy this land and this beautiful place.

At your service always…Harbormaster Mark

Nautical lesson: The term “Bigwig” was seen in text as early as the late 1700′s. It refers the large wigs once worn by men of importance, rank and distinction. Isn’t it odd that most of our leaders today have little or no hair?

Another nautical term is “no room to swing a cat” that of course meant a cramped space. Many of the sayings we use today came from the tall ship and Whaling eras. More to come!
