    A Message from Tom

tom heimsoth Hello Everyone,

As we close out another boating season, I wanted to send everyone a brief note to say "Thank You" for making this year such a success and ask you to help us plan for next year. While this year has been challenging for almost everyone, we did enjoy some truly memorable events and welcomed some wonderful people to our resort. Like most resorts, Heritage Harbor has had to recalibrate and strategize as we navigate our way through some very turbulent waters. We have made some important improvements this year and more are on their way.

We value your friendship and truly appreciate your enthusiasm. As we plan 2011, we are anxious to get your "expert opinion". We have surveyed you on the Marina and your boating needs in recent editions of the "Harbor Happenings". This week we are looking for your opinion on activities, homes, and amenities. Your survey will be anonymous and will serve as valuable guidance for our resort.

We are grateful for your continued support and we continue to strive to deliver the best marina resort community in the entire Midwest!

Tom

Holiday House Walk

Sunday, November 14th

Heritage Harbor Ottawa is pleased to announce that one of the homes featured in this year's Holiday Housewalk, benefiting the Ottawa Regional Hospital Auxiliary will be our very own Harry & Ann Hultgren.

The Hultgren family hails from LaGrange, Illinois and according to Ann & Harry they love to get away from their hectic week and relax in their home at Heritage Harbor. The Hultgren family chose Heritage Harbor for the beautiful homes, breath-taking scenery, and all that the area has to offer... from golfing, kayaking, and cross country skiing to plays, farmers markets and festivals. They have truly embraced Starved Rock Country.

The Hultgren house will be decked out for the holidays and you can take this opportunity to come see their beautiful home and everything Heritage Harbor Ottawa has to offer.

Tickets $15 No admittance without ticket. For House walk information, call 815-434-3411.

Harry and Ann are just one example of the many wonderful folks who own a home at Heritage Harbor. We are extremely grateful to have such a fantastic group of homeowners. We thought you might want to read what our home owners have to say about living at Heritage Harbor:

"A low maintenance getaway not far from home in beautiful surroundings" "Heritage Harbor is where we kick back and relax after a long week" - Harry & Ann H.

"We had been talking about buying a vacation home for a while but our main concern was travel time. Originally, we were looking in the Geneva or Delavan Wisconsin area. Because we wanted activities that we could take advantage of in both the summer and winter months. But, we were still looking for something a little closer. Heritage Harbor was our answer. It is only one hour from our home in Downers Grove! It has the Illinois River, Starved Rock, the I&M Canal, and the downtown area of Ottawa which can be enjoyed year round. Each weekend is a different experience" - Dan & Julie M.

"We like the long term vision of the project where you can enjoy the tranquility of looking at the river and the social aspect of the marina, the pool and the restaurant" - Jim & Laurie R.

"The benefit of a home in Heritage Harbor is not just investing in memories but also it is a good real estate investment on the water" - John & Christina V.

"My experience is in Ottawa has been very fulfilling. I have always wanted to have a property with river access. I grew up in Peoria on the river and now that I live in Chicago I can maintain contact with friends and family have a place to entertain. Additionally, I have found the people of the surrounding communities very friendly." - Tom S.

"Everything is wonderful at Heritage Harbor, some times I have to pinch myself because I can't believe I'm living here" - Laura S.

Come for a tour of Heritage Harbor and see "first hand" what they are talking about!

We brought out our lederhosen, grabbed our beer steins, and put up our beers as we toasted a great season and had a lot of cheers! The Annual Oktoberfest at Deer Park Country Club this past weekend was enjoyed by all who attended. In addition, we were able to spend a special German birthday with our friend, Dana Redding. It truly was a great way to close out October!

Did You Know...Ottawa is the Birthplace of Scouting in America?

On February 8, 1910, William D. Boyce of Ottawa incorporated the Boy Scouts of America - launching the organization which has since meant so much to generations of American youth.

The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nations largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.

Ottawa is home to one of our nation's premier Scouting museums, the Ottawa Scouting Museum, which commemorates the history of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire. It was founded to promote and preserve the colorful and proud traditions of Boy Scouting, Girl Scouting and Camp Fire, via exhibition of the past of these organizations with memorabilia from its vast collection, and the development of a variety of educational programs for all youth.

In June of 2010 more than 500 attendees help to make the Ottawa Scouting Museums "Scout Homecoming" a success celebrating 100 years of scouting.

The Ottawa Scouting Museum is open Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; all of these hours are currently staffed by volunteers and has an aggressive activity program consisting of 13 events for youth, a For Adults Only program, a Trail Ways System and annual fund raising events. (Most sessions are free to the public),

Activities offered by the museum are open to ALL youth in the community regardless of affiliation with scouting.

Upcoming event: Santa's Surprise Workshop: Dec. 12, 2010 fee is $6.00/youth
Registration Deadline: December 6th
Contact information: Ottawa Scouting Museum, 1100 Canal Street, Ottawa, IL 61350.

Hunting Opportunities in Starved Rock Country

The diversity of Starved Rock Country provides ample opportunities for hunting a variety of species in Illinois. From ducks to deer, the majestic landscape of Illinois has a variety of hunting experiences available.

For hunters just getting started, finding and taking a hunter safety course is required by law for persons born after January 1, 1980. Hunters will learn about safety, ethics and many of the skills to become a successful hunter. After taking the course, a person should learn how to use their hunting weapon and practice with it often until they are proficient in using it. Anyone born after January 1, 1980, will need to have a copy of the Hunter Safety Education Certificate available while hunting.

In Illinois you can hunt deer, turkey, upland/small game species, migratory waterfowl/dove/game birds and furbearers.

If hunting for wild game birds is your sport then Starved Rock Country is just where you want to be, particularly through the fall and winter seasons. Many companies and businesses enjoy group hunting outings as well as families who wish to hunt and capture turkey or pheasant for their holiday meals. No matter what your personal or business desires, there are hunting spots in or near Ottawa, Illinois that can accommodate your wild bird game hunting needs.

As the most sought after game animal in North America, the Whitetail Deer has always intrigued both hunters and non-hunters alike. Today, the whitetail is the most widespread deer in the world. The lifespan of a whitetail is 11 to 12 years but most free-roaming deer never live that long; they are hit by cars, succumb to disease, killed by predators or shot by hunters. Hunting is an important wildlife management tool that maintains the health and abundance of game species and the balance of our natural resources. Hunters play an important role in managing wildlife. There are specific hunting seasons throughout the year for different species. Be sure to check with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for seasonal dates. http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/PDF/season_dates.pdf If you want to know where you can hunt there are a variety of hunting clubs and designated areas in Starved Rock Country.

Illinois River Adventures

Illinois River Adventures is a new hunt club that recently opened in our area. Owner, Paul Mustered has access to approximately 1,000 acres of hunting grounds for upland and wetland bird hunting, as well as, deer, turkey & pheasant hunting. This premier hunting land is located throughout LaSalle, Bureau & Putnam County. Illinois River Adventures offers private events for hunters that live both locally and in the Chicagoland Market. For more information about scheduling a hunting adventure contact Paul at paul@illinoisriveradventures.com or 708-557-1663

IDNR has Public Hunting Areas designated at many of the IDNR site. Site specific permits are required to hunt in most of these areas. Check out the Hunter Harvest results from the previous hunting season on public land sites. Hunting is also allowed on private land with the permission of the landowner.

So now that you know what to hunt and where to go... you need to know what to bring... So here is a list:
